Take a stroll through the charming town square, where you’ll discover over 130 listed buildings, giving Nantwich one of the highest concentrations of historic listed buildings in England.
The name “Nantwich” comes from the Welsh Nant yr Heledd Wen, meaning “the stream of the white salt pit.” This refers to the town’s long and fascinating connection with salt production. The Romans were making salt here during the second and third centuries, and remarkably, salt continued to be produced in the town for the next 1,600 years, shaping Nantwich’s prosperity and identity.
